- Abstract
- Ice transit modeling is applied to estimate the operating cost, transit hour, icebreaker escort time and mean speed for large icebreaking cargo vessels navigating in the Northern Sea Route prior to an actual employment of icebreaker fleet. Four different Arctic ships of bulk carriers, LNG carrier and crude oil tanker, which are conceptually designed, are selected for the simulation. Environmental conditions such as sea ice concentration, ice thickness, wind direction and wave height are given by random number generation and their probability densities turned to be a normal distribution. The predicted operating costs and transit conditions for four vessels are compared to those of the original International Northern Sea Route Program(INSROP) project.
