- Abstract
- International Maritime Organization(IMO) recommends that passenger and cargo ships of 24 meters in length and over should satisfy, so called, the weather criterion. The weather criterion relates to ship's dynamic stability in severe wind and wave condition. In order to evaluate whether weather criterion is satisfied or not, we have to estimate the roll-back angle which is an angle of roll to windward due to wave action. In this paper, the model test procedure to measure roll-back angle was established by carrying out model tests with several test conditions such as mooring stiffness and mooring position. Also the three step method to estimate roll-back angle, which is currently examining as an alternative method to direct measurement, was verified by using the model test results under the condtion of which wave slope is small compared to recommended one. In conclusion, roll-back angle is not recommended to be measured in mooring condition, the three step method can be an alternative method to measure the roll-back angle in estimating weather criterion.
