- Abstract
- New projects to develop and protect the arctic or sub-arctic regions have been studied since recent interests of energy and the green earth are increased in the 2000s. Especially, exploration of natural resources and their transportation near the Arctic Ocean and the increase of traffic through the Northern Sea Route(NSR) have stimulated new ship designs and structural concepts. To assess the design and performance of these ships and platforms in the arctic region, model tests in an ice tank are the preferred evaluation tool because full-scale tests in the ice-covered sea are usually very expensive and difficult tasks.
With the support of the Korean Government, the research community and the ship building industries, MOERI has decided to build the next generation ice model basin at Daejeon. The construction began in the summer of 2007 and completed in the middle of 2009. This facility employs state-of-the-art modeling technology and an anticipated full operation as early as 2010. The size and shape are designed uniquely to discriminate the existing ice model basin and to consider ice test capability for ice operating offshore platforms.
In this paper, MOERI’s ice model basin facilities and ice resistance tests are briefly introduced.
