- Abstract
- Extreme air temperature and thick ice sheet are technically the most important barrier to explore and develop the Arctic. Especially, ships and offshore structures operating in the Arctic Ocean are threatened with thick ice sheet and huge icebergs. The damage extent of the structure and the ice failure mode dramatically depend on collision scenario between the structure and ice, and little research has been done on the compressive failure test of ice. In this study, the compression test of ice was carried out with EG/AD model ice, which is used in KRISO ice model basin. A compression test apparatus having a cryogenic chamber falling down to ?150°C was newly prepared. The ice crushing modes according to the collision scenario were measure with high-speed cameras and an image visualization technique, but also some influencing factors affecting the ice failure were analyzed. Finally, the analysis method of ice breaking mode using image visualization technique is introduced in this study. ? 2019 Taylor & Francis Group, London.
