Abstract
This paper shows the feasibility study on the numerical prediction for the performances of resistance and self-propulsion characteristics for a full scale ship by using the RANS (Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes) equation based simulations. The numerical simulations of the resistance and the self-propulsion performances for the target ship are performed in model scale as well as full scale. The experiments for the resistance and the self-propulsion performances of the target ship were also carried out at towing tank in KRISO. The numerical results in model scale are compared with the model test results, and the direct calculations in full scale are compared with the full scale prediction by ITTC procedures from the model test data. The differences in the numerical results between model scale and full scale are investigated for the resistance and the self-propulsion performances, such as nominal wake distributions at propeller plane, total resistance coefficients, thrust deduction factors, wake fractions, hull efficiencies, and etc. The scale effect in the numerical simulations may provide some information for the study of the full scale prediction from extrapolated experimental data by ITTC procedure. The feasibility and some practical topics of the present RANS methods for the resistance and the self-propulsion performances for a ship in model and full scale are discussed. ? 2021, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.
