dc.description.abstractRecently the influence of the frictional resistance is getting bigger when ice-going vessels navigate in the Arctic Ocean because the sea ice extent is decreasing more rapidly than predicted. The frictional resistance mainly depends on the frictional coefficient between ship hull and sea ice. Moreover, the frictional coefficient relies on roughness on hull surface, ship speed, sea ice condition, floe size, lubrication condition, air and sea ice temperatures, etc. In this paper frictional coefficients between model ship and model ice were studied in order to predict the frictional resistance in model test stage. We tested various materials with EG/AD model ices and the results were analysed with previous studies. In addition, test methods for the frictional coefficient in model test were verified. Finally, we evaluated the painting method that can control the frictional coefficient between test sample and model ice by adding a little bit of matting powder.the frictional coefficient between ship hull and sea ice.
