dc.description.abstractEstimation of ice load under various operating conditions is important during the construction and the operation stages of an icebreaker. In the previous study, the authors derived two semi-empirical formulas for global ice load on the icebreaking vessels under different operating conditions, i.e., extreme condition and normal operating condition. In this paper, estimation of head-on impact ice load for large icebreaking vessels in level ice is discussed. The empirical formulas are compared to the ice load calculations based on measured ice properties and by a numerical model for three ships, shuttle tanker Vasily Dinkov, bulk carrier MV Arctic and research vessel Araon. By comparing results, it is recommended that the normal operating ice load formula may be useful in the design of icebreakers.reaking vessels under different operating conditions, i.e., extreme condition and normal operating condition.
