The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has established international regulations of the Arctic Ocean sea route, which are expected to increase offshore traffic considerably in the future. The vessels should satisfy the regulations and standards, so the people and equipment on the vessels are secure. In order to protect the environment and lives in the polar region, IMO adopted a new regulation, the so called, “Polar Code” as a safety measurement, and SOLAS has been revised in the 94th Maritime Safety Committee (MSC) in 2014. The obligation of ship design, crew training, and search/recue were amended. The revised regulations were ratified by the IMO in 2015, and were effective in 2017. This study investigates recently proposed agenda and regulations that are already in practice for operating vessels in the Arctic sea, based on the Polar Code. The Polar Code is based on the GBS (Goal Based Standard) guidelines by the MSC resolution whichare being discussed at several sub-committees such as the Ship Design and Equipment (DE)), the Ship Design and Construction (SDC) etc. Finally, the Polar Code, which is investigated in this paper, is considering possible application for the currently developing KARS in order to support a safe voyage with a reliable Arctic navigation in the Arctic Sea Route.-
