- Abstract
- Personnel on ships often report excessive tiredness and fatigue which they relate to the motions of the ship, however the symptomatology and incidence of motion-induced fatigue (MIF) has not been systematically investigated or reported.
Fatigue is a failure to sustain physical activity at a required level, and may occur as a consequence of changes in muscle function as a consequence of energy expenditure (peripheral factors) or central factors.
Some of the symptoms of MIF, such as lack of motivation, excessive tiredness and disinclination for work, are similar to some of the symptoms associated with motion sickness. This suggests that MIF may be at least partly caused by central factors involving neuro-humoral responses to low frequency motions.
This paper reviews current knowledge of the possible effects of low frequency motions on factors which could be associated with both peripheral and central fatigue.
