Abstract
An experimental study for measuring the mechanical properties of a slender structure model was performed to verify a numerical simulation program for dynamic motion of a slender structure under water for analyzing impulsive response. The ∅25mm PVC pipe is selected as a slender structure model. The PVC pipe could be modeled as a single DOF mass-spring-damper system. It is verified that mechanical properties of the model such as the viscous coefficient, , and the modulus of elasticity, , can be derived from the tension response of the model induced by a step force input. The viscous coefficient, , is calculated by applying the logarithmic decrement from the tension response which is measured by a load cell installed at the fixed end. The modulus of elasticity, , is calculated by the spectrum analysis of the tension response. The mechanical properties of the model would be used as the input of the numerical simulation program. It is expected that this experimental results also could be used to verify the numerical simulation program.
