dc.description.abstract | Automatic identification system (AIS) data gathered at vessel traffic service (VTS) centers include various and useful information with respect to each vessel navigated in the control area of VTS, which is used for maritime traffic analysis and management. This paper presents a method for estimating positional probability distributions to reflect the vessel trajectory patterns using AIS data. Considering the applications to global situational awareness algorithms for autonomous ships, a kernel density estimation technique is applied to the AIS data in order to construct a positional database form that can provide the probability values at arbitrary reference points. The feasibility of the proposed method is demonstrated using a real AIS dataset obtained at a VTS center. | - |
