- Abstract
- The study of packet sniffers in both theoretical and experimental frameworks is carried out, in order to understand the behavior of each network performance and OSI layer protocol stacks in the long propagation delay networks, such as Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks (UW-ASNs). From this study, we realized that with the knowledge of long propagation delays and node collisions which packet analyzer could help to find the source nodes in a distributed manner by utilizing the information that it picks up from overheard packets. We have been interested in the design of a packet sniffer that is suitable for multi-hop UW-ASN networks. The proposed scheme utilizes a packet detection technique to overcome real-time node collisions and making experimental prototype of controller node which can be suitable for UW-ASN. Unlike other existing terrestrial packet sniffers, our proposed packet sniffer can only be formed from a single node. And it helps to develop routing MAC protocols even when the network is operating at low or high load. In addition to the use of packet sniffer and analyzer, our design utilizes a receiver-initiated reservation approach which can greatly help the node to avoid collisions. ? 2013 American Scientific Publishers.
