dc.description.abstract | HNS (Hazardous and Noxious substances) are regulated by the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships. Over 1,800 substances, including dangerous and harmful ones, have been registered. While accidental leakage during transportation is a known concern, continuous discharge from marine industrial facilities has received little attention. A study was conducted to assess the concentration and distribution of hazardous substances discharged from coastal industrial facilities in Korea. Samples were collected from 156 sites, revealing the presence of various substances in seawater and sediment. Low molecular weight substances were found in seawater, while high molecular weight substances and trace metal compounds were detected in sediments. Detected HNS were prioritized based on their characteristics and potential impact on the marine environment. Future research aims to revise HNS priorities and establish a list for effluent management through continuous monitoring. It is important to investigate the origin of detected substances and develop accurate analysis methods and detection equipment for HNS. ? 2023 IEEE. | - |
