Abstract
EEDI(Energy Efficiency Design Index) regulation was implemented by IMO(International Maritime Organization) to reduce the CO2 emissions from the ships. The regulation will be enforced in Phase 1 started in 2015. To meet the EEDI regulation, the speed of a ship will be slower, and this will make a ship difficult to keep the maneuverability in adverse weather by reducing the power of installed engine of the ship. So IMO implemented the Interim Guideline about the minimum propulsion power of a ship in adverse weather in 2013. In this paper the movements of IMO about the assessment method of minimum propulsion power of a ship are presented. And the movements of researches for the prediction and assessment of minimum propulsion power are also described, like as EU’s SHOPERA project and Japanese JASNAOE project. the speed of a ship will be slower, and this will make a ship difficult to keep the maneuverability in adverse weather by reducing the power of installed engine of the ship.
