The characteristics of wave loads on a vertical cylinder and the hydroelastic response of the cylinder are numerically investigated. Finite element method is applied in the scope of potential theory with fully nonlinear free surface condition in time domain. To generate an extreme wave, a frequency-focused unidirectional wave is adopted in a three-dimensional numerical wave tank. The hydroelastic response of the elastic vertical cylinder is analyzed by a mode superposition method. Structural responses and loading characteristics of the elastic vertical cylinder due to an extreme wave are discussed.-
