Motion of a heavy transport vessel in waves is numerically investigated by using a method of nonlinear time-domain analysis for floating body motion. In this study, focus is made on the roll motion of the transport vessel which is significantly influenced by nonlinear wave loads acting on the transported offshore structure. The present numerical method includes nonlinear restoring and Froude-Krylov forces acting on instantaneous wetted surface and two wave-in-deck impact models are examined. Firstly, in order to investigate the effect of wave impact loads, Pinkster's barge model with wide super structure is numerically tested. Next, two-dimensional transport vessels with wide and narrow super structures are simulated. Results of calculation are compared with experimental data. Finally, a heavy transport vessel is numerically simulated under the regular and irregular wave conditions. The present computations are compared with experimental data and the characteristics of nonlinear roll responses are discussed.
