- Abstract
- In order to determine the ships’ optimum route through a weather routing system, the accurate and quick prediction of resistance and propulsion performance is necessary. When a ship is going on a voyage in real sea, it faces with not only hull resistance in calm water but also added resistances due to external forces which come from wind, waves, current, etc. And it also faces with various added resistances due to drift and hull roughness condition. This paper studies the prediction method and calculation procedures for the resistance and propulsion performance of a ship operating in real sea environment. For the improvement of calculating process, an enhanced method has been developed, which utilizes pre-calculated database for the evaluation of the resistance and propulsion performance for a ship. This method has been applied to the weather routing module of KRISO Arctic Safe Voyage Planning (KASVP) system under development, which is supposed to be used for vessels operating in Arctic sea. This system shall be tested on the first research ice breaker of Korea, Araon, in the near future. ? 2017 Taylor & Francis Group, London, UK.
