- Abstract
- Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering (KRISO), as one of the Government projects, has been developing various technologies for the national strategy on ballast water management such as the establishment of ballast water information system, survey on status of ballast water discharge and conduction of port risk assessment. The national ballast water information system is linked with the geographic information system and its database consists of the shipping records, ballast water discharge records, port environmental data and risky species distribution data. This ballast water information system has been applied to the environmental comparison and risk assessment of the ports. KRISO conducted port risk assessments through a species-specific method which was originally created by CSIRO and the GloBallast Program method, which had slightly been modified by KRISO. This paper shows these modified programs and the results of the port risk assessment carried in the Republic of Korea.
