Abstract
An experimental method with a new backbone system is presented to estimate six DoF sectional loads on ocean going vessels. Two different backbones, which is made of commercial steel rectangular hollow beam, with different stiffness are applied to a nine divided model ship. A set of wave induced loads experiment in regular and irregular waves is carried out. A method of estimating the sectional forces of divided model ship from the strains on the backbone is proposed in this paper. Comparison between the experimental and calculated data with BEM method presented to show validities of the proposed estimation method. The whipping response characteristics of vertical bending moment is also discussed. It is shown that the amplitude of whipping vibration component reaches at about 40% of wave induced loads by input wave.
