This paper describes the influence of the stem frame shapes of large container ships on the hydrodynamic performance. Stem frame shape becomes very important from the view paints of propulsion propeller and cavitation as well as resistance partly. Three after-bodies having three types of stern frame shapes such as barge-conventional U-and medium-type were systematically designed to understand the effects to the resistance, propulsion and wake characteristics by means of experiment and computational fluid dynamics. The barge-type after-body shape shows the best resistance performance and better powering performance by 3.5% even though the conventional U-type shape shows the best propulsion performance. Medium-type after-body shape shows almost the same powering performance and is considered to give better propeller vibration and cavitation characteristics than the barge-type shape.-
