Abstract
This paper describes the concept design and powering performance of a 20,000 displacement ton class trimaran which is composed of a slender main hull and two side hulls. The cruising and maximum speeds of the trimaran are 22 knots and 29 knots, respectively. Resistance tests and numerical calculations have been conducted to investigate the resistance characteristics. The results of the preliminary design for the trimaran and wave resistance according to the variation of side hull positions are shown. The results show that the wave interaction between the main hull and side hulls is mainly affected by the longitudinal positions and draft variations of side hulls, while less by transverse positions, and a favorable interaction occurs when the side hulls are located at the midship of the main hull at the maximum speed. The powering performance of the trimaran which is propelled by twin screw is also compared with that of the monohull.nots, respectively.
