This paper reviews the current status of IMO's revision on the biofouling guideline, and introduces the strategy and research status of KRISO (Korea Research Institute of Ships and Ocean Engineering) to meet preemptive response for the guideline. Control and management on ship’s biofouling has the advantage of not only preventing invasive biofouling, but also reducing operating costs and carbon dioxide emissions of ships. Under this environment it is expected to be enforced soon when guideline revisions are finalized. KRISO’s strategy and preemptive response to the control and management technology for biofouling has focused in the fields of risk assessment, anti-fouling system design of niche area, automatic inspection, and in-water cleaning including proactive and reactive cleaning by hull cleaning robots.-
