dc.description.abstract | Ballast water has been of great advantage to the stability of marine vessel instead of dry ballasts which raises labor wages for loading/unloading. Recently, the topic of ballast water has drawn attention due to its influence on coastal ecosystem by harmful nonindigenous organisms included in it. In this connection, IMO(International Maritime Organization) is supposed to restrict the untreated ballast water discharge by mandatory regulations in near future. Hence, an appropriate management system and technology for ballast water are in urgent demand to kill/remove/inactivate the unwanted organisms in ballast water. In this paper, a comparative review for studies on ballast water is made with aim to stimulate the timely development of ballast water treatment technologies, particularly in Korea. Specifically, physical and chemical disinfectant technologies are introduced with high emphasis on so-called mid ocean ballast water exchange. In addition, promising development strategy and required core-technology for ballast water treatment are recommended through the present cooperative survey. | - |
