dc.description.abstractIt is well known that marine debris gives rise to death or injury of oceanic lives, threatens marine safety of surface vessels, and reduces esthetic value of coastal scenery. Korean ocean is suffering from the problem of marine debris, which is mainly caused by the sudden industrialization accompanying urbanization, and increase of population. It is the reason why the Korean government (the ministry of maritime affairs and fisheries) is now trying to mitigate the impact of marine debris by supporting several R&D projects in KRISO/KORDI . In this paper, we introduce the present situation of the problem of marine debris in Korea. At the same time, the main body of the paper deals with the state of the art of the main project for marine debris in Korea. As elemental technologies, we demonstrate essential accomplishments of four categories of the project during past five years (1999~2003): prevention, in-situ survey, recovery, and treatment. Throughout the context, we lay high emphasis on the significance of practical approaches to the problem of marine debris.-
