dc.description.abstractNavigation Support System has been developed and applied for high speed medium size container ship, CHUNGHAE-30 to increase navigational safety and efficiency. Navigation Support system is designed to reduce navigation officers’ working loads during navigation especially in complicated traffic area. The system includes three sub-systems; navigation information supporting system, auto path tracking system and collision alarm and avoidance system. Navigation information support system synthesizes navigational information from all the navigational equipments onboard and processes them for navigation officer to be able to make a decision more conveniently and rapidly. Path tracking system enables the ship to follow the planned route. With this system, navigation officer can be free from steering and concentrate much on watchkeeping. Collision alarm and avoidance system evaluates and displays the risk of collision in real time during navigation. Generally the navigator would control a ship for himself to avoid collision by monitoring the displayed risk but if he wants the system can control ship full-automatically. Navigation support system consists of two radars(S-band and X-band), one ECDIS, one CID and VR monitor system. The developed system has been installed and tested on ship handling simulator in KRISO-
