dc.description.abstract | The need to build and test hardware prototypes(Mockup) to determine their effectiveness in meeting operational requirements has been a major contributor to the expense and length of time to design, build, and test new systems. Recent and dramatic advances in Real-Time Graphics and Computer based M&S(Modeling &Simulation) technologies hold out the promise of revolutionizing design and acquisition strategies by providing the means to validate ship designers' requirements before real ship construction. By designing and operationally testing DMU(Digital Mockup) in a virtual environment, these technologies will soon offer naval architects the ability to build and launch ships in computer-based cyberspace instead of the normal ship-builder s ways. The authors of this paper provide the review and background for these developments, explore the significance and outgrowth of these technologies to the current process of ship and system design, outline challenges lying ahead by summarizing the pioneers' concept of these field, and present the vision of Real-Time Graphics for M&S and recommendations for future development by using the sample R&D results from KRISO/KORDI. | - |
