dc.description.abstractRecently, the attention to large container ships whose size is greater than 10,000 TEU container ship has been increased due to their increasing demand. The large container ship has twin skegs because of the engine capacity and large beam-draft ratio. In this paper, the maneuvering characteristics of a container ship with twin skegs were investigated through free running test. Turning tests and zig-zag tests were carried out at Gap-Cheon in Daejeon. The tests were carried out for 12,000 TEU class container ship with twin skegs at scantling load condition. GMT of 1/51.0 scaled model ship was 0.059 m. And the test speed was 1.73 m/sec corresponding to 24.0 Knots of real ship. The rudder forces of twin rudders were measured during the tests. Using the hydrodynamic coefficients obtained from 4DOF(four degree of freedom) HPMM(Horizontal Planar Motion Mechanism) tests the free running tests were simulated. And the simulation results were compared with the free running test results. The rudder normal forces of twin rudders were compared. The measured results of rudder forces were decreased more rapidly than simulated forces. With the comparison the flow straightening coefficient will be corrected for the good agreement between the free running test and simulation.-
