Most ships are navigated depending on radar and ECDIS, nowadays. However, if there is a traffic ship or a rock, that is not recognized by radar or is not registered in ECDIS, the ship may be confronted by catastrophic accidents such as collision or grounding. Hybrid ship-handling simulator is a on-board navigational support system and provides enhanced navigational information, in which real-time outdoor images of cameras installed in ship are overlaid with the three dimensional GIS images based on ECDIS, so that uncertainty of navigational information can be reduced and ship can be navigated more safely. In this study, a hybrid ship-handling simulator using ship model is developed and a free running model system is also developed. Image acquisition equipment with CCD camera and various navigation sensors are installed in the ship model. In land control center, navigational status is monitored through overlaid images and ship model is controlled by manual operation of joystick or auto-navigation. Navigational data and camera image are transferred from ship to land control center through dual wireless networks. The performances of hybrid ship-handling simulator and free running model system have been tested through several experiments in in-land water and the results are also described in this paper.-
