dc.description.abstractThe Hybrid Maritime Simulator (HMS), using the technology of Augmented Reality (AR) shows both real maritime environments and real ship motion from the camera on the physical model-ship, whereas a traditional maritime simulator shows entire virtual images which are generated from high-end grahpic computer and ship motion calculated by mathematical model. In the view of simulator itself, HMS gives a ship operator virtual environment more immersively, by using technology of AR. Thinking that the limitations not offering realistic maritime environment in real time and fully modelled ship motion exist, HMS will be good choice. HMS can be used navigational support system. The monitoring image combined 3-D virtual models (such as buoys, guide line – zone) with real images acquired from a camera on a ship, helps ship operator to aware better with navigational information. Also HMS can help a ship test by replacing 3D models (such as buoys, traffic ships) that needs a time and money to make during the test. The main technology of developing HMS using technology of AR is a synchronization method for combining real camera image and virtual 3-D image. Because two images are acquired separately, we can make one overlapped image by using the 6-DOF ship motion data. In this paper, the procedure of HMS tested in GapCheon and technology synchronizing 3-D models to camera images properly are introduced.-
