dc.description.abstractA WIG (Wing In Ground-effect) craft flies close to the water surface by utilizing a cushion of relatively high-pressure air between its wing and the water surface. This implies that when one designs such craft, it is very important to have a weight efficient, lightweight structure. To fulfill this requirement, this paper deals with the simple but efficient structural assessment of metallic/non-metallic stiffened/un-stiffened plates under a lateral pressure load to identify the most appropriate material and configuration at the preliminary design stage of a WIG craft. A generic rectangular plate is considered then its structural topology is varied for the structural assessment. The proposed various structural topologies include high-strength steel web-frame stiffened plate, aluminium-alloy (AA2011-T6/AA7075-T6) web-frame stiffened plates, CFRP/GFRP top-hat stiffened single skin laminated plates, high-strength steel web-frame stiffened CFRP/GFRP single skin laminated plates, high-strength steel web-frame stiffened CFRP/GFRP sandwich plates, CFRP/GFRP top-hat stiffened sandwich plates and CFRP/GFRP un-stiffened (monocoque) sandwich plates. For sandwich plate constructions, a PVC foam core is used throughout. Those 13 different structural topologies are assessed using elastic closed-form solutions. In the assessment, a set of stress limit obtained from practice is imposed as a design constraint, and the geometry dimensions and weights of the structural topologies are calculated and compared to identify which structural topology can be suitable for the structural member of the WIG craft.-
