dc.description.abstractAn overview of high performance yacht design is presented with respect to researching activities which were presented on the HPYD conference, the international conference on high performance yacht design which was held in 2002 and 2006 in New Zealand, and showed the latest developments in yacht research from around the globe. This conference was a venue where naval architects, engineers, designers and researchers could present and hear papers on the current state of high performance yacht and power craft technology. Advances in high performance yacht design are being driven by a range of factors, including development of new racing classes and demands for increased size and performance of racing and cruising craft. Radical design concepts such as innovative new hull forms, moving keels and masts and new approaches to sails and propulsion systems require innovative approaches to analysis, design and experimental verification. In this paper, with examples of a yacht named BMW-Oracle, one of the ACC yacht, and the typical standard yacht for Volvo Ocean Race, named VO70, some of the characteristics of the high performance yachts are introduced.-
