dc.description.abstractTwo huge container terminals are under construction at the southern coast of Korea, one of which is Busan New Port. The biggest ship which may call at this port is expected to be 12,000 TEU-class container ship, whose overall length is about 380m and whose maneuvering characteristics are yet unknown. In this paper, the safety assessment results for the 12,000 TEU class container ships calling at South Terminal of Busan New Port are described. The geometric modeling of the harbor and its approach channel, mathematical modeling of 12,000 TEU class container ship are described. Various safety assessment results by FTS(fast time simulation), RTS(real time simulation), and MTS(maritime traffic flow simulation) are briefly described together with some recommendations to enhance the maritime traffic safety in this area.-
