dc.description.abstractDue to the rapid increase of maritime traffic volume and the size of ships, most ships are experiencing higher risk of maritime accidents such as collision and grounding, nowadays. If there are not any proper countermeasures to avoid these kinds of accidents, trivial initiating events may be combined with other hazards or faults to result in catastrophic accidents. In order to provide crews with capabilities to promptly cope with the risk of collision or grounding and thus to reduce the probability of casualty, many Collision and Grounding Risk Monitoring Systems (CGRMS) have been developed. Due to some weakness of this system, however, the efforts to incorporate this system with more popular Navigation Supporting System (NSS) has not yet been so successful. In this paper, the reasons of this weakness of the system are reviewed and the methods to enhance its practical capabilities are described on a basis of user interviews and correlation analysis between coastal and ocean navigations, which are implemented by using Fuzzy algorithm and Environmental Stress (ES) model concept. The enhanced real-time CGRMS is developed and installed at the ship handling simulator system and its capabilities have been tested through various simulator experiments, the results of which are also described in this paper.-
