Since the beginning of the industrial period in the late 18th century, the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), which is a major greenhouse gas, continues to rise along with the increase in fossil fuel consumption. Various technologies have been internationally proposed for reducing atmospheric emissions of CO2 from human activities. Especially, in recent, carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) technology is regarded as one of the a promising emission reduction options that CO2 be captured from major point sources (eg., power plant) and transported for storage into the geological structure or deep ocean area. Storage methods of CO2 can be divided into two categories - 1) injection into geological structure such as oil and gas reservoirs, saline aquifers, and coal-bed, and 2) direct injections into the deep oceanic environment (>2,500m) (dissolution type and lake type). The purpose of this paper is to review the current state of knowledge regarding the technical and scientific aspect of the CO2 ocean sequestration technologies, and to introduce relevant on-going R&D project in Korea.-
