dc.description.abstractCharacteristics of wave loads and run-ups on a truncated vertical circular cylinder are experimentally investigated in the Ocean Engineering Basin of MOERI/KORDI. The diameter and draft of the cylinder are 16m and 24 m, respectively and the scale ratio is around 1/50. The incident waves have 24 cases of regular waves consisting of 6 different wave frequency (T=7~15 s) and 4 different wave steepness (H/L=1/50~1/10). The present tests can be viewed as reproduction of the experimental study of Stansberg and Niesen(2001) expect for measurement of wave loads. The present paper describes briefly the general procedures of the experiments and the fundamental behaviors of the responses of the cylinder in the context of the wave loads. In order to get consistency of the experimental results, comparison of wave forces in terms of first-order hamonic, second-order harmonic and mean components are made with numerical prediction using the finite element method. At the same time, wave run-ups are also compared with numerical methods and other experimental results by Kristiansen et al. (2004). The present series of experimental results are expected to be utilized as a validation data set for numerical methods such as computational methods that are currently beginning to be used as design tool.-
