dc.description.abstract | With the rapid growth of the VR (virtual reality) technology, the virtual training simulator is becoming more realistic and faster, and more and more popular. But thousands of new considerations have also come into being to the developers of the virtual training simulator. Fortunately, several ready-made VR solutions have been developed, and the developers can select VR products and make simulators with the VR tools easily. In this paper, we introduce our PC-based ship handling simulator which presents realistic visual scene in real-time. For the visual simulation, we employ Vega Prime 3D application development toolkit from Presagis. Vega Prime is a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) toolkit available for real-time visual simulation and enables us to develop real-time 3D graphic applications easily and rapidly. Especially, it provides a marine module which represents the waves, wakes, and buoyant effects fast and the distributed rendering technique which describes a single image frame across many computers in a network. However, the current version of Vega Prime has a few bugs and we cannot control the some features of Vega Prime fully. This paper addresses the issues about the real-time ship handling simulator, particularly in the context of 3D visual simulation development with Vega Prime. | - |
