dc.description.abstract | Several radio systems are installed onboard to meet the federal requirements for communications at sea. Especially, the Very High Frequency/Ultra High Frequency Communication (VHF/UHF Comms) system is utilized on ships to transmit and receive tactical, operational, and administrative information, and this system generally includes subsystems such as Ship-to-Ship, Ship-to-Shore, bridge-to-bridge, and etc. In this paper, the development of onboard communication simulator system as a network based communication system using Voice over IP (VoIP) technology is described. This system can simulate a model of VHF, UHF or MF/HF radio, which is delivered with microphone or a handset. And all I/O to the unit is provided through a 100 Base-T network connection. Using this connection, the Virtual Radio is delivered. Also, we adopt “Speex”, a Voice Codec Library, to encode and decode voice data. It is very flexible and provides good quality speech in the VoIP applications. This simulation technique offers realism with real radio communicator setups, and does not transmit using RF, and allows complete separation of training exercises. Also, this system offers a lower cost virtual radio panel with all of the same operating characteristics and easy functional modifications and managements of communication system. | - |
