The International Convention for the Control and Management of Ships Ballast Water & Sediments was adopted by consensus at a diplomatic conference of IMO at 2004. MOERI has been developing various fundamental technologies such as biological survey, type approval procedure and technical information for formulation of the regulation for national strategy of the IMO Convention. MOERI also started to develop the risk assessment technology of ballast water. For the risk assessment, sampling survey of ballast water discharge has also been conducted because it was not mandatory procedure to submit the ballast water reporting form to port states and there were no any statistics for ballast water discharge in Korea. The information items of voyage and discharge of ship's ballast water are derived. Using the 97 results by sampling survey on the relation between loading/unloading and discharge/uptake of ballast water, the amounts of discharge/uptake of ballast water at each port and all of country in Korea are predicted. The uptake of ballast water is predicted to about 70 million ton in Korean important ports at 2006 which is over 3 times than discharges.-
