dc.description.abstractHQW(Hybrid Quay Wall) concept has been developed in Korea to enhance the logistics efficiency of container loading/unloading operations of ULCC(Ultra Large Container Carrier). HQW has its own propulsion and steering systems (azimuth thrusters) and it comes alongside the opposite side of a berthing ship to load or unload containers. Related with this concept, the safety of HQW needs to be considered from two points of view. One is the navigational safety of other vessels around the area where HQW is deployed or is moving, since HQW may be an obstacle to other vessels navigating nearby. The other is the navigational safety of HQW itself when it is moving or coming alongside a berthing ship, since it may not be easy to control HQW. To check the overall navigational safety related with HQW, its navigational simulator system has been developed. In this paper, the development of HQW simulator system is briefly described. Safety assessment results by this HQW simulator system show that it is very useful and can be applied to various fields, such as, safety assessment of HQW operations, training HQW crews, determination of HQW operating conditions, and etc.-
