dc.description.abstract | Excessive growth and root mat formation is a problem during seedling preparation. This study sought to develop a method to minimize excessive growth and root mat formation in sweet pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) seedlings. The experiment was set up as a completely randomized design with three replications. Hybrid cultivar “Sonik” seeds were planted in plug trays coated with 0%, 1%, 3%, 5%, 7%, 10%, or 15% Deep Sea Water NaCl (w/v) and compared with control. Plant growth rate (shoot and root length, fresh and dry weight) and seedling root structure were observed in the plastic plug trays at 28, 35, and 42 days after sowing (DAS). The same observations were recorded 35 days after transplanting (DAT). The results showed that the Deep Sea Water NaCl coating significantly minimized excessive growth and root mat formation. Seedlings grown in the Deep Sea Water NaCl-treated trays produced more fibrous roots. Before transplanting, control seedlings were taller, had longer roots, and had significantly higher fresh and dry shoot and root weight, but after transplanting seedlings from the Deep Sea Water NaCl-coated trays showed better performance; they were taller, had longer roots, and had higher shoot and root fresh and dry weight. The 7% Deep Sea Water NaCl treatment produced superior performance among the treated and control plants. | - |
