Maritime traffic safety assessment has been enforced by law in Korea since Jan. 2010, which is called Maritime Safety Audit(MSA) system. Based on this audit system, any construction works which may influence the maritime traffic safety should be assessed from shiphandlers’ view points before its official approval for the implementation. For the implementation plan to be qualified for this MSA, it has to fulfill some criteria, which can be assessed by shiphandling simulation results. In this paper, shiphandling simulator experiment has been carried out to estimate the influence of the maneuverability of own ship model on the quantitative and qualitative assessment results for navigational safety of a ship. For these, series of experimental simulations have been carried out by changing ship maneuverability, the layout of approach channel, and environmental conditions, systematically. As long as external disturbance is not so severe, it is seen that the quantitative assessment result may not be so sensitive to the ship maneuverability, however, the qualitative assessment result may change significantly depending on the ship maneuverability model. It can be concluded that shiphandlers may mitigate the maneuverability difference of ships, which result in a little difference in shiphandling results but big difference in the mental burden they feel during navigation.should be assessed from shiphandlers’ view points before its official approval for the implementation.
