dc.description.abstract | The conning display, located on the ship’s bridge, shows a variety of important information such as a ship’s position and speed, track data, rate of turn, and thruster rpm, and is one of the key IBSs (Integrated Bridge Systems). To propose an ergonomic screen layout for the conning display, this study conducted an experiment on the screens of three displays which are currently in-use on a ships navigation systems. An experiment using an eye-tracking system was conducted to compare the eye movements, performance times and error rates according to typical navigation protocol scenarios including departure and arrival situations. A set of optimized content arrangements in the conning display are suggested based on the experimental results and are compared with the performance of three other currently used displays. The results show that the optimized arrangement suggested from the results of the eye-tracking experiment was the best performer in terms of performance times and error rates.
