dc.description.abstractThis paper presents a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) having multiple thrusters and an RF communication buoy for high maneuverability under strong tidal currents. The vehicle equips with two main thrusters and four vertical/horizontal tunnel thrusters in the middle of the vehicle. The buoy is connected to the ROV with an intermediate cable, of which a wireless RF modem is installed to communicate with a support vessel. This paper presents the system design and development of the ROV and the buoy. This paper briefly discusses the hydrodynamic characteristics of the tunnel-type thrusters, and presents the strategies to launch, recover and maneuver the ROV at high speed under tidal currents. This paper demonstrates operational effectiveness of the ROV having the buoy by conducting a simulated mission for an object installation under the sea.-
