Most ships are designed to operate economically in deep&wide ocean condition. However, it is also true that operation in shallow and confined water condition like harbor or channel is inevitable for almost all ships. Recently, ship manoeuvring in shallow and confined water has become an issue again to people those who have interest in safe manoeuvring of ships. Reflecting ship manoeuvring in shallow and confined water issue, the main focus of SIMMAN 2013 was set as manoeuvring of a ship in shallow water. The organizing committee of SIMMAN 2013 requested many research institutes in the world to conduct captive model tests of KCS container ship in shallow water, and requested submitting test data for comparison. To study issues of ships’ hydrodynamic characteristics in shallow water, recently, Daedeuk branch/KORDI (former KRISO) built an equipment to mimic shallow water condition, and conducted preliminary captive model tests to check feasibility of conducting tests in shallow water condition in our facility. This paper is a summary of preliminary shallow water manoeuvring captive model tests result of KCS. Test conditions are checked considering test feasibility and analysis of test result. In addition, manoeuvring captive model tests results in shallow and deep water are compared.euvring in shallow and confined water has become an issue again to people those who have interest in safe manoeuvring of ships.
