dc.description.abstract | In this study, we investigated the effect of initial trim condition on resistance and self- propulsion performance using CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) analysis. CFD analyses examined three commercial hull forms such as the container ship, VLCC tanker, and LNG carrier (KCS, KVLCC2 and KLNG) designed by KORDI (Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute). The towing tank experiments were carried out to verify the simulation results for KCS and KVLCC2 among 3 hull forms. The five trim conditions of even keel, 1 meter and 2 meter trim by stern and bow were considered. The tests were repeated for four speed conditions including design condition at each trim condition. The powering performances are strongly dependent on the waterline shape of each hull form as a result of trim condition. CFD prediction shows a good agreement with the experimental results such that CFD could be a useful tool for the predictions of the optimum trim condition of the commercial shipping. ship, VLCC tanker, and LNG carrier (KCS, KVLCC2 and KLNG) designed by KORDI (Korea Ocean Research & Development Institute).
