dc.description.abstractThis paper presents an experimental study on towing characteristics of a barge. A series of model tests were carried out at the Ocean Engineering Basin of MOERI. The model with scale ratio 1:50 was made of wood. Firstly, force coefficient tests were performed in order to obtain surge, sway and yaw force coefficients of the barge. Force coefficients were compared with CFD results. Next, towing tests in calm sea were carried out with different towline length and different towing speed. The trajectories of the barge and towline tension were measured during the tests. Measured trajectories were compared with two simulation results using experimental and CFD force coefficients.
