dc.description.abstract | The recent inclination of oil price after 2008 make us resume research and development on ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC), and stimulate industrial activities in the world. Korea also have launched OTEC project since 2010 to develop 1MW in 2016 and to design 100MW in 2020, which includes improving such key technologies as cycle analysis, heat exchanger, turbine generator etc based on road map. We are going to use 1MW OTEC plant to supply the electric power for operating Sea Water Air Conditioning (SWAC) system for 2018 Winter Olympic ice rink. The validity of this ocean thermal energy utilization system was evaluated by the standard of energy costs and CO2 emissions by comparing with a conventional system from the same ice arena. From the results, 62% of the total energy (TOE) and 84% of the costs can be saved; this implies a reduction of 67% of CO2 emissions by conventional system. Such initiatives as OTEC and SWAC will make the 2018 Winter Olympic to be close to zero carbon emissions event and a truly “green” Olympics.lop 1MW in 2016 and to design 100MW in 2020, which includes improving such key technologies as cycle analysis, heat exchanger, turbine generator etc based on road map.
