dc.description.abstract | Hydrodynamic performance is an essential element in designing a planing vessel which is required to be operated with a high speed in a rough sea. This paper introduces the works done to estimate the hydrodynamic performance of a high speed water-jet planing vessel by model test and sea trial in a design stage. High speed planing hull form is designed for a 3-ton class vessel whose required performance is to have a maximum speed of 45knots and to be able to operate in a sea state 4. Water-jet is chosen as a propulsive system which is more efficient in high speed range. Model test is the most popular and reliable method to estimate the hydrodynamic performance of a designed ship. In this study, model tests are performed in a towing tank with a 1/6.5 scaled bare hull model whose length is about 1m. A lot of useful information could be obtained from the model test but they are not enough to predict the full scale performance of a designed ship. Sea trial has been done to estimate ship speed and manoeuvring performance with a 7m full scale radio-controlled model using RTK DGPS and AHRS. Predicted real ship resistance obtained from the model test results is compared with the thrust measured in bollard-pull tests. Speed tests and turning tests have been also done for several speeds. This paper will discuss the model-ship correlation of a water-jet high-speed planning vessel.water-jet planing vessel by model test and sea trial in a design stage.
