dc.description.abstract | In order to improve the placement of aids to navigation (AtoN) as an initial challenge, this paper suggests a performance index for placement of AtoN, which can quantitate the effect of placement for AtoN. It is assumed that the waterway is predetermined under the previous investigation for a safe voyage. It can be considered that the best placement is the placement that the navigator can best recognize the AtoNs on. Visibility to AtoN depends basically on the light source, the weather condition and the position of navigation on the sea. Visual recognition is carried out by getting the light contrast between the light source and the back ground light attenuated through air. Therefore the performance index is formulated based on the amount of the light contract. For the simplification, this approach is based on the values of the human factor suggested by IALA (International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities). predetermined under the previous investigation for a safe voyage.
