The present study considers a correlation between slamming impact loads and whipping vibrations for an ultra-large containership. Recently, a systematic model test for the measurement of slamming impact loads and structural responses was carried out in the ocean basin of KRISO. A segmented ship model of 10,000TEU containership with 1:60 scale was considered. Six segments were connected by a steel backbone where more than 100 strain gauges were attached to measure structural responses. The bow-flare and stern slamming loads were measured by distributing a number of load cells on the bow-flare area. The model ship was towed in regular and irregular waves with various ship speeds and wave heading angles. Based on the measured data, a correlation between the slamming impact load and whipping vibration for the 10,000TEU containership is presented and discussed.rried out in the ocean basin of KRISO.
